Bathroom tile is all laid! It’s drying and will be grouted tomorrow. And I am realizing that I could never have survived in an outhouse era – walking to my next door neighbors’ house to pee makes me want to cry. And it’s a beautiful day (70s/low 80s), low humidity and sunny.
So – tiling! We started around 7:30 this morning. Well, maybe a little later, but my uncle was hear and unloading stuff before 7:35. The first thing we did was get the old toilet out. The flange was broken, so I ran to Home Depot to get a new one while my uncle started cutting the cement backer board. The backer was what intimidated me the most – because it’s a giant sheet. By 11, we had laid the backer: cut out the backer, put thinset between backer and old floor, screw it down every 6″ or so and seal the seams and thinset any gaps. Dryfitting the tiles was another 2ish hours. I learned how to use a wet saw (fun fact – it doesn’t cut people. Not that I tried.) Then tile was set – while I ran back to Home Depot for a taller wax ring for the new toilet (mostly we needed taller bolts). Then cleanup. When all was said and done, the tiling related work was from 7:30 – 4:30. I am beat. I want a bath. I can’t walk in my bathroom. I am sad.
After my uncle left, I threw a quick coat of paint up in U’s closet (this was only 10-15 minutes). Looked at bathroom floor. Worked. Looked at bathroom floor. Got dinner. Looked at bathroom floor. Showered at neighbors’. Looked at bathroom floor. Assembled U’s Elfa shelves. Wished I could pee at home or take a bath.
Tomorrow – grout and toilet setting. And peeing at home! Seriously – I am grumpy about the non-bathrooming, but going from a horrible laminate that was discolored to beautiful tile *that I helped do!* – I am besides myself with excitement!
My peeps had a great first day in Texas, they visited the Kennedy Museum. Tomorrow – zoo!
(I will go back and add in some of the pictures I’ve been taking but I’m too tired right now).
The Sixth Floor Museum is the first place we take visitors to in Dallaw.
Yay on redoing the bathroom!
You know you are *more* than welcome to come redo my house (or any part there of) the next time I go out of town, right? :-)
