Dan and Ursula left for Dallas today – they’re there for 5 nights. That’s if they ever get there – the 2nd leg of their trip has been delayed almost 4 hours due to storms and then some check engine light on the plane.
Anyway – I am (of course!) have spectacular plans. Plans started with me painting our bedroom, then I added in getting some prints of some of my photos, then a new bathroom floor, then a new toilet. Oh and then this morning I decided I’d redo Ursula’s closet too (can’t let an Elfa coupon go to waste!).
I picked out tile 2.5 weeks ago at Home Depot. It was a stock tile, not on sale, I talked to the worker guy about it, blah blah. Very traditional octagon & dot tile – nothing out there or crazy. Go to get the tile yesterday. No tile. Oh yeah – it’s discontinued and no Home Depots have any. Okay – that’s a lie – one has 8 and one has 5 and one has 6 – but there is no way I can piece together the 40 I needed. Thankfully, Lowe’s has basically the same tile. I did have to go to 2 Lowe’s to track it down, but I have it. (I didn’t get it sooner because, well, I am trying to hide all of this from Dan.) I realize that typed out that doesn’t sound all that dramatic, but Dan’s work paging had been going crazy and literally had us up every 15-20 minutes ALL night the night before, so I was a wreck.
I dropped them off at the airport at 1:45 and went straight to Home Depot to select a new toilet (couldn’t do that ahead of time because a toilet is huge and unhideable). The new toilet is VERY exciting. It stays clean longer! I don’t understand how this is possible, but it sounds exciting. It also can flush a whole bucket of golf balls with one flush. (I will NOT be testing this – we have ancient pipes). I thought I needed a round bowl because my bathroom is small, but realized I can do an elongated (yay). The Home Depot man and I had a fascinating, yet baffling conversation. Apparently, “men prefer an elongated bowl”. The conversation had this air of “we’re all speaking euphemistically but know what we’re talking about” excpt that I don’t!!! WHY do men prefer it? Is it because they are taller and the toilet is bigger? Is it easier for peeing? I want to know!!!! (Then I went online to read reviews of my toilet and the first bad review was from someone who didn’t know it was enlongated and they wanted round because “round seals to their body better and the elongated doesn’t capture smells”. I can’t make this stuff up.)
Post toilet, I went to The Container Store to plan U’s closet. (Is it bad when the worker – who has never worked directly with me before – says “Oh! I know you!”? Dan is less than thrilled that they ALL know me). The closet is basically Dan’s design, but sized to her closet. I was surprised to learn that her closet – which seems SO much smaller – is actually 4″ wider than Dan’s. Dan’s is deeper – but that space is sort of wasted. She doesn’t need a tie rack like Dan’s, so I got her a little valet rod where she can put out her outfits.
When I got home, I did my bathroom “demo” (ha!) I pulled the quarter round and threshold. Scrubbed floors (it was SCARY under the quarter round). Got everything out of Ursula’s closet and the old rods down, filled holes (it had these crazy wall anchors that worked with nails not screws – getting them out was un-fun). Moved lots of furniture out of our bedroom. Including Trixie’s crate – she is pissed. Painted bathroom baseboards. Did some paint touchups in the hall (ran out of trim paint that weekend and never finished them). Went back to Container Store to get closet bits. Sanded U’s closet. Ordered a Scout “Junque Trunk” to put in bottom of U’s closet. Attempted to paint closet but we were almost out of paint. I was able to do the cut-ins and paint where the track will go so I can get it mounted any time I can lure someone over here to do it – the rolling of walls will be fast.
Tomorrow is tile day!!! My uncle is coming over in the morning to help me lay it. I am more nervous about the underlayment than the actual tiling – it’s cumbersome. I may get closet painted too. Friday morning I’m grouting, then toilet goes back in Friday night. Trying to NOT think about the 32 hours I will be toilet-less…
